Specialists highlight the rich ecology of Sagres, Portugal

Specialists in ornithology, botany, geology and marine biology will be highlighting the hidden natural world of the Sagres peninsula in a series of discussions scheduled for 2nd October at 2:30 pm, as part of the Sagres Birdwatching Festival.

Hoopoe

Sara Magalhães (Sea Unlimited) will be dealing with questions in marine biology, particularly about the Cetaceans (whales and dolphins) of Sagres. Paulo Fernandes (University of Algarve) will be speaking about the geology, while botany is the province of Manuel Rosa (Almargem).

The group points out that the unique combination of flora, fauna and geology to be found in the Sagres Peninsula has made it a natural treasure.

It is this combination of elements that has prompted the many layers of statutory national and international protection, including Nature Network 2000, the Nature Park of SW Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, and the Biogenetic Reserve.

The Sagres Birdwatching Festival will take place from 1st to 3rd October, and is organized by the Municipal Council of Vila do Bispo in conjunction with SPEA, Almargem, the Institute for the Conservation of the Environment and Biodiversity, and the Algarve Tourism Authority. The aim is to increase awareness, both among the local population and among visitors to the area, of the value of this rich ecology, and the need for its protection.
